How Many Countries Are in Oceania? 14, 16 or 24 — the Full List by Region
Oceania has 14 states with a UN seat: Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and eleven island states. With the Cook Islands and Niue, which are in free association with New Zealand, it is 16; the Pacific Islands Forum counts 18 members. On our globe there are 24 shapes, because territories such as Guam, New Caledonia or French Polynesia get stamps of their own. Every country by region:
The number: 14, 16 or 24?
Oceania is the continent with the fewest people and the most flags that belong to no state: territories of the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Chile, Australia and New Zealand lie between the 14 states. The numbers you will meet:
| Number | Who counts this way | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| 14 | United Nations | Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu. Latest member: Palau, 1994. |
| 16 | Many lists | + the Cook Islands and Niue: their own governments, in free association with New Zealand, treated by the UN as states with treaty-making capacity, but not members. |
| 18 | Pacific Islands Forum | The 16 above plus French Polynesia and New Caledonia – territories of France with their own representation. |
| 24 | Our globe | 14 UN members + the Cook Islands, Niue, Norfolk Island, New Caledonia, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, French Polynesia, Pitcairn, Wallis and Futuna – territories with their own ISO code and shape. |
| 25+ | Geographic lists | + Hawaii (USA), Easter Island (Chile), Western New Guinea (Indonesia), Tokelau (New Zealand), Christmas Island and the Cocos Islands (Australia). |
For everyday use: 14 countries, 16 with the Cook Islands and Niue. Whoever says "every country in Oceania" faces one of the hardest collections in the world: hardly any direct flights, a few flights a week, and Nauru has a single airline.

The edge cases
- Hawaii – geographically Polynesia, politically a US state since 1959. Part of the United States in country counts; on our map too.
- Easter Island (Rapa Nui) – the easternmost end of Polynesia, Chilean since 1888. Whoever has been there has been to Chile – and to Oceania.
- New Guinea – the second-largest island in the world, divided: the east is Papua New Guinea (Oceania), the west Indonesia (Asia). The same island, two continents.
- New Caledonia and French Polynesia – French overseas collectivities with their own governments. New Caledonia voted against independence in 2018, 2020 and 2021. Own ISO codes NC and PF, own shapes, not states.
- Cook Islands and Niue – self-governing, with their own foreign relations; their citizens are New Zealanders. Not in the UN, but in the WHO and UNESCO. Our map: separate shapes.
- Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa – US territories in the Pacific. Guam is the westernmost corner of the United States, with the date line just beyond.
- Kiribati – the only state lying in all four hemispheres: the equator and the 180th meridian cross its territory. Since 1995 it has moved the date line so that the whole country lives on the same day – and is the first to greet the new year.
- Timor-Leste – geographically on the edge of both worlds, politically Southeast Asia and in ASEAN since 2025. Counts as Asia.
Oceania in numbers
| Record | Country | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Largest area | Australia | About 7.69 million km² – the sixth-largest country in the world and the only one that is an entire continent. |
| Most people | Australia | About 27 million people; Papua New Guinea follows with about 10 million and more than 800 languages. |
| Smallest area | Nauru | 21 km² – the smallest republic in the world and the smallest island state; only Vatican City and Monaco are smaller. |
| Youngest state | Palau | Independent since 1 October 1994, UN member since 15 December 1994 – the youngest country on the continent. |
| Landlocked states | 0 | The only continent where every country has a coastline. |
| Island states | 12 of 14 | All except Australia (a continent) and Papua New Guinea (which shares New Guinea with Indonesia). |
What counts as visited – and how to really "have" Oceania
The rule is the same as everywhere: under the strict rule a country counts after a night's stay, under the middle rule once you have left the transit area, under the loose rule even on a layover – the three rules in detail. Oceania is the continent where the rule costs the most: there is no direct flight between Nauru and Tuvalu, United's "Island Hopper" serves five island states with a single flight – and whoever lands only to refuel has collected nothing under the strict rule.
In Love the World the titles for it are called "Oceania Sailor" (two countries in Oceania) and "Pacific Pro" (four), plus "Island Nation Collector" for five island states, which are easier to collect here than anywhere else. Each of the 24 shapes above gets its own entry stamp in the passport – Guam, Niue and Pitcairn with its roughly 50 inhabitants included, because maps show territories, not memberships. Frequently asked questions
How many countries are in Oceania (2026)?
14 states are UN members: Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and eleven island states from Fiji to Tuvalu. With the Cook Islands and Niue, which are in free association with New Zealand, you reach 16; the Pacific Islands Forum has 18 members because French Polynesia and New Caledonia belong to it too.
Is Australia a continent or a country?
Both. Australia is the only country that fills an entire continent. Oceania is the wider region around it: Australia, New Zealand and the island world of the Pacific in the three regions Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.
Is New Zealand part of Australia?
No. New Zealand is a separate state about 2,000 kilometres east of Australia – a dominion since 1907, a founding member of the UN in 1945. In UN statistics the two together form the region "Australia and New Zealand".
Is Hawaii part of Oceania?
Geographically yes: Hawaii lies in Polynesia. Politically it has been a US state since 1959 and counts as the United States in country lists – just as Easter Island counts as Chile and Western New Guinea as Indonesia.
What is the smallest country in Oceania?
Nauru at 21 square kilometres – the smallest republic in the world and the smallest island state. Tuvalu follows at 26 square kilometres, the fourth-smallest country in the world.
How many countries are in Polynesia?
Three UN members: Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu, plus the freely associated Cook Islands and Niue. Everything else in Polynesia belongs to France, the United States, the United Kingdom and New Zealand – and New Zealand itself is culturally Polynesian.
